As well as providing a dazzling vehicle for the virtuoso soloist it is a work of truly symphonic ambition and musical argument for the soloist and the orchestra. This is perhaps not surprising as it was written in an astonishing burst of creativity that also produced the epic 5th symphony and this concert's other work : his sixth symphony. 1 interval
