Chloé Zhao is scaling things back with Hamnet, her adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s critically lauded 2020 novel, which imagines the grief shared by William Shakespeare and his wife Anne Hathaway at the death of their 11-year-old son Hamnet. Paul Mescal plays Shakespeare, Jessie Buckley is Hathaway. It’s not to be confused with Hamlet, Aneil Karia’s contemporary take on Shakespeare’s tragedy, which stars Riz Ahmed as the doomed prince.
