"As a proud Dubliner, I’m absolutely thrilled to bring the 2nd edition of Doc’n Roll Film Festival to my hometown. After launching this passion project in London over a decade ago, it’s an honour to now showcase these incredible music documentaries at the Lighthouse Cinema. This year’s lineup is one of our most eclectic yet, spanning genres and cities from all over the globe. From the raw energy of Gogol Bordello and the genre-defining legacy of Pauline Black, to the lush, orchestral indie rock of Broken Social Scene, I can’t wait for Dublin audiences to experience these captivating stories on the big screen.”

Galway Film Society Autumn/Winter 2024 season

As we celebrate GFS 60th anniversary, we would like to take this opportunity to provide you with an insight into GFS history, therein paying tribute to Joe McMahon, GFS former Chair, RIP, to thank GFS supporters and to highlight some dates for your diary!

The History of Galway Film Society / Tribute to Joe McMahon, by James Harrold

For sixty years Galway Film Society has been at the heart of culture in Galway and the west of Ireland and at the heart of GFS for most of those years were Joe and Bridie McMahon. Outstanding GFS Chair and passionate cinephile Joe McMahon personified all that is great in Galway film. He passed away last May but his legacy endures.

Joe McMahon was a native of Limerick and grew up in a city of cinemas, where every neighbourhood appeared to have its own beloved picture palace. Following some years with Aer Lingus Joe became a valued senior administrator in the Science and Engineering faculties of University College Galway where he quickly gained a reputation for his clarity of thought and expression and his wise counsel. Joe was kind, thoughtful and supportive, a real professional, qualities manifest too in his leadership of GFS and in the Federation of Irish Film Societies – now ‘access>cinema’, where in the words of Finola Costello of Picture House Wexford ‘He was a colossus in helping to facilitate the rapid provision of cultural cinema in Ireland’.

With Joe at the helm of an energetic and imaginative committee the GFS seasons of screenings became essential entries in Galway’s cultural calendar. Every Monday evening the O’Flaherty Theatre in UCG was the place to see the great films, to stay in touch with significant contemporary art, to feel part of the intellectual and political movements of Europe and the world, to look and listen well beyond the little city. All Galway’s creative folk gathered there: from  young radical students, and emerging artists to grizzled veterans of the culture wars of the fifties, sixties and seventies; quite a few were connected with the university, many came from outside the walls, aficionados in city and county who wanted more than the blockbusters in the commercial cinemas, and relied on the programme of  seminal cinematic stepping stones to guide them across  the long dark winter nights, and the dismal days too: Ireland’s political turbulence was reflected in the exceptional curatorship, featuring the independent Irish film makers, determined to shine their lights onto our gloomy island.

Those screenings of the late seventies and eighties exuded a sense of an energised arts community finding its voice. At that stage, already two decades old, GFS had a track record of achievement, confidence, and success that the newer groups could aspire to. In company especially with Druid Theatre Company and Galway Arts Festival, Galway Film Society developed the unique west of Ireland voice and aesthetic that propelled Galway to the forefront of the arts in Ireland.

Joe and his soul-mate Bridie were early morning swimmers at Blackrock, Salthill. The fortitude with which they faced the cold waves was called for when the idyll in the O’Flaherty Theatre was disrupted. In January 1986 the University caved in to unpleasant external pressure of religious zealots who entered the campus to prevent the screening of Godard’s ‘Je vous salue Marie’.  Rather than confront and deny  the censorship of the mob, UCG withdrew its facilities from the Society. Suddenly homeless, GFS showed the film off-site, as a pop-up. The personal toll on Joe and Bridie was real: they had to face down letters of abuse, including believable death threats from wicked, anonymous and self-appointed defenders of the faith.

In a city light on arts infrastructure the Society had little choice than to return to UCG but it was never quite the same comfortable haven and the febrile traces of the college’s capitulation lingered.  When the city’s new Town Hall Theatre opened its doors in 1995 Galway Film Society was welcomed by  Galway Corporation as an anchor presence, a valued shareholder in the city’s life. GFS moved in for many seasons of happy, undisrupted Sunday evenings, with Joe and Bridie leading. With the space and freedom  of the Town Hall’s benign régime as the municipal showcase for all arts groups GFS could expand its social programming, linking with the diversity of Galway communities, providing connections with older age groups, social action groups and language societies of new Galway residents. As a godparent  of the original Galway Film Fleadh and a consistent supporter and curator of new film-making  in Galway and Ireland  GFS was a consistent trail-blazer.

Joe’s insights and judgment throughout made him a major presence in Galway’s arts community.  He was on the first boards of the Galway Arts Centre and the original Galway Film Fleadh. He was utterly supportive of the emerging Galway filmmaking community, in its confident charge towards the highly prized and vastly constructive award in 2014 of Galway’s UNESCO City of Film status and the creation of the Pálás, Galway’s new venue for the art of cinema, which opened in 2018 with GFS as a resident presence. In the words of the former director of ‘access>cinema’, Maretta Dillon: Joe McMahon ‘was rigorous and independent in thought and always looked at the broader picture…he gave audiences in Galway and Ireland the opportunity to see a broader range of World cinema. The arts and film in particular, owe him a debt of gratitude.’

Reputedly Joe’s favourite film was Wild Strawberries, Bergman’s masterful contemplation of a life’s journey. Joe’s life journey in film was a triumph. He led from the front, bestowed kindness, clarity and innovation and immeasurably improved film in Galway for audiences and artists. His intellectual curiosity, good humour and breath of understanding  were always at the service of Galway, Ireland and the arts. He truly was a colossus.

                          Our Thanks

Míle buíochas to GFS supporters, especially its voluntary committees and loyal audiences who ensured GFS 60 year success. “From the Desk of…Mrs. Robinson” at Light House Cinema & Pálás

In celebration of the nationwide release of MRS ROBINSON in cinemas on August 23rd, the University of Galway, in collaboration with Light House Cinema, Pálás and BREAK OUT PICTURES, is proud to present an exclusive exhibition: “From the Desk of…Mrs. Robinson.” This special exhibition, hosted at the Light House and Pálás Cinemas, offers the public a rare glimpse into the remarkable archive of Mary Robinson, one of Ireland's most influential and respected figures.

Earlier this year, Mary Robinson—former President of Ireland and a pioneering advocate for human rights—marked her 80th birthday. To honour this milestone, the University of Galway, custodian of Robinson’s extensive archive, has curated a selection of materials that both inspired and feature in the documentary MRS ROBINSON.

The exhibition showcases a rich collection of materials spanning over six decades of Robinson's distinguished career. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore reproductions of documents and artifacts from her time as a barrister, legislator, senator, and professor, as well as her tenure as President of Ireland. The archive also includes materials from her global roles, including UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes and Climate Change, Chair of The Elders, and founder of Realizing Rights and the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice.

Curated by Niamh Ní Charra, project archivist at the University of Galway, this mini-exhibition brings to life the profound impact of Robinson’s work and her ongoing legacy in the fight for justice and equality.

MRS ROBINSON—directed by Aoife Kelleher and produced by Cormac Hargaden and Trisha Canning for Loosehorse—delivers Mary Robinson’s story in her own words for the first time. The documentary chronicles her tireless battles for justice over more than 50 years, from the streets to the courts, the ballot box, and the corridors of power. The film will open nationwide on August 23rd, offering audiences an intimate look at Robinson’s extraordinary life and contributions.

Mary Robinson first gained widespread attention as a reforming constitutional lawyer and senator, before creating a political earthquake by winning the Irish Presidential election in 1990. As UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, she cemented her legacy by challenging human rights abuses globally. Today, she continues to wield influence as Chair of The Elders—a group of global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela—and as a leading voice in climate justice through Project Dandelion, a women-led initiative addressing climate change.

The exhibition is open to the public at Light House Cinema from August 16th to September 1st and Pálás cinema from 23rd of August to September 4th.

JANET PLANET tells the story of Lacey and her mother, Janet. In rural Western Massachusetts, 11-year-old Lacy spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother. As the months pass, three visitors enter their orbit, all captivated by Janet and her spellbinding nature. In her solitary moments, Lacy inhabits an inner world so extraordinarily detailed that it begins to seep into the outside world.Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker captures a child's experience of time passing, and the ineffability of a daughter falling out of love with her mother, in this singularly sublime film debut.

                                                  2024 Pride at Pálás

This year Galway Community Pride runs from August 10th to August 18th, and Pálás Cinema are delighted to be included in the programme with screenings of ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER and ORLANDO, MY POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY.

ORLANDO, MY POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY screens on August 11th - Book Now

"Come, come! I'm sick to death of this particular self. I want another."

Taking Virginia Woolf's novel Orlando: A Biography as its starting point, academic virtuoso turned filmmaker Paul B. Preciado has fashioned the documentary, Orlando, My Political Biography, as a personal essay, historical analysis, and social manifesto which premiered and took home four prizes at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival. For almost a century, Woolf's eponymous hero/heroine has inspired readers for their gender fluidity across physical and spiritual metamorphoses over a 300-year lifetime. Preciado casts a diverse cross-section of more than twenty trans and non-binary individuals in the role of Orlando as they perform interpretations of scenes from the novel, weaving into Woolf's narrative their own stories of identity and transition. Not content to simply update a seminal work, Preciado interrogates the relevance of Orlando in the continuing struggle against anti-trans ideologies and in the fight for global trans rights.

ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER screens on August 18th - Book Now

This Oscar-winning melodrama, one of Pedro Almodóvar’s most beloved films, provides a dizzying, moving exploration of the meaning of motherhood. In an instant, nurse Manuela loses the teenage son she raised on her own. Grief-stricken, she sets out to search for the boy’s long-lost father in Barcelona, where she reawakens into a new maternal role, at the head of a surrogate family that includes a pregnant, HIV-positive nun; an illustrious star of the stage; and a transgender sex worker. Beautifully performed and bursting with cinematic references, All About My Mother is a vibrant tribute to female fortitude, a one-of-a-kind family portrait, and a work of boundless compassion.

Dublin International Film Festival is hosting a special screening of John Butler’s ‘impossible to resist’ film Handsome Devil (2016) on Thursday 25th July, here Light House Cinema. The one-off event is part of a series of unique cinema experiences presented as part of the Tanqueray 0.0% Film Club and will feature an In Conversation with John Butler and other special guests.

Premiered as the Closing Night Film at DIFF 2017, members of the cast and crew, including Director John Butler (The Outlaws, The Stag, Papi Chulo) will reunite to enjoy and celebrate this coming-of-age comedy. By bringing this contemporary classic back to one of Dublin’s leading independent cinemas, DIFF is doing what it does best: supporting, showcasing, and promoting the best of Irish filmmaking talent.

Produced by Treasure Entertainment (Papi Chulo, The Stag, Flora And Son), and starring Fionn O’Shea (Dating Amber, Normal People) and Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You, Bottoms), alongside Andrew Scott (Ripley, All of Us Strangers, Sherlock), Handsome Devil is a story of friendship and fun told with a tenderness and honesty that makes it as relevant and poignant now as it did to audiences who enjoyed when it first hit the big screen.

The film follows the story of the unlikely friendship of boarding school roommates Ned (Fionn O’Shea) and Conor (Nicholas Galitzine), who despite taking an instant dislike to each other are encouraged by their English teacher Dan Sherry (Andrew Scott) to find their own voices and defy the status quo of their rugby-obsessed school.

Director John Butler said,It’s a dream to see Handsome Devil continue to find a devoted global audience so long after its ‘first life’. Maybe the message is timeless - people will always need friends, and acceptance, and stories on screen will always have the power to bring souls together to look at the flickering light, in the dark”

There are also plenty of recognisable and well-loved stars in the supporting cast with Moe Dunford, Hugh O’Conor, Ardal O’Hanlon and Amy Huberman making appearances, and Brian O’Driscoll choreographing the top-notch, on-field rugby action.

DIFF Festival Director Grainne Humphreys said “John Butler is one our most talented Directors, and we’re proud to have premiered The Stag, Handsome Devil and Papi Chulo at previous festivals. The timeless impact of this title and its ability to continually connect with international audiences is testament to John's storytelling and the stellar cast and the creative teams he works with.

This one-off special screening is the latest in a series of unmissable events presented as part of the Tanqueray 0.0% Film Club, which launched earlier this year at DIFF 2024 as a way to elevate the cinema experience and bring filmmakers together for magnificent conversations.

Following the screening, John Butler and members of the cast will revisit their experiences of making the film and explore how their careers and projects have developed since. Irish actress, writer, and Tanqueray Brand Ambassador Amy Huberman will host the conversation and invite members of the public to put their questions to the Handsome Devil team.

Fresh from storming the stage at Glastonbury and the Irish premiere of their self-titled feature film at the Galway Film Fleadh last night, KNEECAP have programmed a film series titled KNEECAP SELECTS which will play at Light House and Pálás ahead of the release of their debut feature film KNEECAP on August 8th.

Having already garnered international acclaim at Sundance Film Festival in Utah and Sundance London earlier this year, Irish audiences are hotly anticipating the release.

Based on the origin story of the riotous and ground-breaking Irish-language rap trio Kneecap, the film stars the band’s Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí in their acting debuts alongside Academy Award® nominated Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs, 12 Years a Slave), Simone Kirby (Hidden Assets, Jimmy’s Hall), Jessica Reynolds (Outlander), Fionnuala Flaherty (Ros na Rún) and Josie Walker (Belfast, The Wonder). Set in west Belfast in 2019, it chronicles how fate brings the trio together and how they then go on to “change the sound of Irish music forever”.

For KNEECAP SELECTS, each member has picked either a favourite film or one in which they feel inspired their own story, and had the following to say about each.

The Greasy StranglerA strange and weird film, pure bullshit, no one should watch it. It’ll put ye off hotdogs for life. Bain sult as!” - DJ Próvaí

I have a good feeling about this

This September, STAR WARS is coming to Light House & Pálás! Both the original and prequel trilogy with screen at both venues, with SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY and ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY screening at Pálás.

                                                              September 14 - Prequel Trilogy

Young Anakin Skywalker leaves his home on Tatooine to train to become a Jedi under the tutelage of Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. As the Galactic Republic and Jedi order face threats - Anakin finds himself seduced by the dark side to ultimately become Darth Vader.

                                                              September 15 - Original Trilogy

Another farm boy from Tatooine, this time Luke Skywalker, helps a pair of droids deliver a message to a 'Ben' Kenobi - ultimately leading him to team up with smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca, and a Princess called Leia. He becomes a Jedi and saves the galaxy from Darth Vader and the Empire.

In their quest to bring you all the very best that cinema has to offer, the programmers of Light House & Pálás found themselves at The 77th Festival de Cannes in May. They have kindly shared some of their festival highlights ! With 6am wake ups for tickets and many films watched, there's simply not enough of a word count to cover everything and so, films that are very likely already on your radar receive an honourable mention such as; Yorgos Lanthimos' Kinds of Kindness, Paul Schraders' Oh, Canada, Coralie Fargeat's The Substance as well as Bird, the latest from Andrea Arnold.

Alice Black - Head of Programming

'There’s no greater moment for film programmers than when the Cannes selections are announced. The anticipation of new cinematic gems from names you know and love and names to be discovered begins. 10 days, over 40 films and what seems like a 1000 cups of coffee later, I’m happy to report there’s plenty to look forward to. These were some of my favourites:

Bird – Andrea Arnold has a very special talent for working with and telling stories about younger people. Bird is no exception. A curious combination of gritty social realism woven through with moments of magic, this tale of a young teen (newcomer Nykiya Adams) coping with a challenging environment (enter Barry Keoghan as a deadbeat dad) who makes friends with a mysterious stranger (the always wonderful Franz Rogowski), is incredibly affecting. There may have been tears.

Armand – Winner of the Camera d’or for Best First Feature, this Norwegian drama is striking calling card for director Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel. Much like last year’s hit Anatomy of Fall or The Teacher’s Lounge, this is a psychologically complex examination of a day long parent-teacher meeting dealing with the shocking behaviour one of its young pupils. With a superb ensemble cast, there’s some extraordinary moments between the two mothers played by Renate (Worst Person In the World) Reinsve and Ellen Dorrit Petersen. Unforgettable.

Flow – Latvian animator Gints Zibalodis created quite a stir at Annecy with feature Away and I had high hopes for this new film about a group of animals trying to survive a devastating climate event. Dialogue-free with no humans in sight, I’ve never been more invested in the unlikely friendship group of a black cat, golden retriever, lemur, and a heron as they navigate danger on their journey through an incredible landscape. Working largely on his own, this films is a triumph of animated storytelling and the most devastating and ultimately hopeful, look at climate change impact.

Grand Tour – There is something classical but also entirely bonkers about Portuguese filmmaker Michel Gomez (Tabu) style of filmmaking. Beautifully shot in black in white, this is an epic and episodic sprawling tale of 20th century adventure as Edward, having an existential crisis, travels the world to find meaning. Hot on his heels is the fiancé he has left behind. Almost dream-like, there are wonders to be found in every scene. But it isn’t for everyone, and tried the patience of a few colleagues. I loved it.

Good One – American shorts filmmaker India Donaldson makes her feature debut with this deceptively quiet and subtle indie drama which takes place over a weekend backpacking trip in the Catskills. Smart and grounded 17 year old Sam has to content with the egos of her father and his oldest friend as it becomes clear, very quickly, who is the adult on this trip. Newcomer Lily Collias is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Anora – I haven’t spoken to anyone who wasn’t over the moon about Sean Baker’s Palme d’or win for this amazing film. Bringing the kind of warmth and compassion for his characters which we’ve seen all his other films (Florida Project, Tangerine, Red Rocket), this is his take on a modern day Cinderella story. A young sex worker from Brooklyn meets and quickly marries the son of a Russian oligarch. But her fairytale doesn’t last long when news of the nuptials reaches his parents and they set out to force an annulment. Like an X-rated Howard Hawkes screwball comedy, this is without a shadow of a doubt one of my favourite films of the year so far. I can’t wait to see it again.'

                                                                      Will Fitzgerald - Pálás Programmer
'I hit the croisette for the first six days of the festival this year and managed to squeeze in a respectable (in my opinion!) 20 films in that time. Here are some of my highlights:

Kinds of Kindness - The best, most absurd darkly comic triptych about love, power, and obsession that you will see this year! You will never guess where the individual chapters will take you next and the complete film will leave you thinking about the thematic ties long after. It’s a structure that invites rewatching and luckily there isn’t a long wait until its on our screens.

The Surfer - More than just another fun entry into the ‘Nicolas Cage goes crazy’ canon, its also another absorbing entry into the ‘director Lorcan Finnegan warns about the perils of home ownership’ canon! And an exquisitely crafted one at that.

Oh, Canada - Another Cannes competition entry that grew on me post-screening. A layered and complex narrative, its an imperfect film about the imperfectness of memory. A fascinating late career film from Schrader, with a plot about a director looking back on his life, adapted from the final novel by Schrader’s Affliction co-writer Russel Banks, and starring his American Gigolo lead Richard Gere as the haggard dying man. Complete with nostalgic, lavish scenes of 60’s/70’s Americana by one of the great New Hollywood filmmakers.

Emilia Pérez - Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, Rust and Bone) makes a musical! I’m so grateful I went in blind to this one. I went from disbelief, to disbelief that it could work, to being fully onboard and invested in the Machiavellian machinations of these characters. A wild ride.

The Balconettes - A Noémie Merlant, Céline Sciamma collaboration is of course unmissable. Cheekily evoking Rear Window while disrupting the male gaze in a story about getting away with murder is the kind of cute filmmaking you can expect from director Merlant, while skilfully balancing the humour with the more serious themes.

The Substance - Superb casting. A perfectly conceived body horror. The fear of aging and your own body turning against you, personified and writ large, and celebrated in lights, just the like the entertainment industry does with youth. Embellished with neon pinks and blues and gooey yellows. Brilliant sophomore feature for Revenge’s Coralie Fargeat.'

David Kelly - Light House Programmer
'This year's Cannes didn't quite match the dizzying heights of last year's but it did give us Palme d'Or winner Sean Baker, the return of Francis Ford Coppola and it gave me around 50 mosquito bites which is a new personal best. I arrived at the beginning of week 2 and things immediately went surreal with Rumours from Guy Maddin, starring Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, Charles Dance, Denis Ménochet as members of the G7 who's summit is disrupted by pesky bog body zombies. It's hilarious and surreal as you'd expect from Maddin and probably his most accessible work to date.

Next up, The Substance - Coralie Fargeat's Revenge was an unforgettable experience, so I had similar expectations going in here and holy moly, did it not disappoint. In the last 30 mins alone I saw Hellraiser, Evil Dead 2, The Fly and Society all referenced so the horror fan in me left the screening totally exhilarated. A delicious follow up to Revenge with an incredible central performance from Demi Moore. Loved it. We'll need to bring back Death Becomes her before it opens.
Another highlight was Ali Abassi's The Apprentice. I think I had more fun at this than any other screening over the week. It was a late one and the crowd were in a party mood so I got in the spirit. The 80s style and soundtrack on screen helped of course and really brought me back to the likes of Scarface and Wall Street. Fascinating, compelling and salacious and not the direction I expected from Abassi after Holy Spider. I think audiences here will have a lot of fun with it in spite of the ghouls at the centre of the story. Jeremy Strong and Sebastian Stan are pitch perfect.
Other highlights include Tawfik Alzaidi's beautifully paced debut Norah, Hiroshi Okuyama's heartwarming and uplifting My Sunshine and Yorgos Lanthimos' delightful ode to control Kinds of Kindness. Looking forward to you seeing all the above and hearing what you think!'

We look forward to bringing all of these wonderful films to audiences in Dublin & Galway - starting with Lanthimos' Kinds of Kindness on June 28th!

Did you think those students were really lost in the woods? Were you tempted to join an elitist cult or clique? 1999, a year that surely shaped modern cinema, laying the groundwork for a new era of teen superstars and visionary directors. Was it the year cinema was at its best or were people looking for escapism for fear of the Millenium Bug?

It’s time to swap whatsapp for wassssup. Get ready for a 1999 makeover as this summer Light House and Pálás have dug deep into the archives and dusted off their tinted glasses to treat audiences to a feast full of seduction, satire, suspicion and supernatural including Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, the ever-relevant Election, the sun-soaked The Talented Mr. Ripley and of course the Wachowski’s revolutionary The Matrix.

Loyalty+ members will not only relish in a wistful trip down memory lane on screen, but their wallets will also enjoy nostalgic ticket prices with season events at 1999 pricing (€4.99).

On planning the season, Light House Cinema programmer David Kelly reflects:

The year 1999 was certainly a formative one as I spent a huge portion of it planning to go to my local cinema to absorb sights and sounds that would stay with me for the next 25 years. The 20th century went out on a cinematic high with masters like Stanley Kubrick, Pedro Almodovar, Spike Lee, David Lynch and Martin Scorsese releasing films alongside newcomers like Sofia Coppola, Paul Thomas Anderson, Lynne Ramsay and Spike Jonze.

It was a year that changed the mainstream cinematic landscape with genre defining releases such as The Blair Witch Project and The Matrix taking horror and action to terrifying and incredible new heights. 1999 gave us some of the greatest coming of age movies of all time in Cruel Intentions and But I’m a Cheerleader and razor-sharp satire such as Drop Dead Gorgeous. It’s a delight and honour to dedicate an entire season to one of cinema’s greatest years. I’ll see you at the Light House this Summer!”

Many of the Irish filmmakers, actors, and animators making waves internationally made their first films as part of Ireland’s robust short film scene. It is also where new and emerging talents are making work that reflects the breadth and diversity of filmmaking on the island of Ireland today. With Séasúir Shorts, audiences will have a regular opportunity to see short films in the cinema, outside of festivals. Past and present shorts fit for a big screen experience will be showcased this Summer, Autumn, Winter and next Spring. These seasonal programmes will feature a mix of short dramas, documentaries and animations, and all for a ‘short’ price of €7.50.

Séasúir Shorts is made possible with the support of the Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland Audience Development Fund.

As a producer and director, he created hundreds of B-movies over six decades but was also a major figure in American cinema who helped launch the careers of Scorsese, Coppola, De Niro, Jack Nicholson and more. In the early days Corman’s creativity and sheer entertainment value as a director won him acclaim for films like The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), The Pit and the Pendulum (1961) and The Masque of the Red Death (1964). Later in his career, and closer to home, Corman had a huge impact on filmmaking in the West of Ireland, where he created a studio in Connemara in the mid 1990’s and produced close to twenty feature films in five years with a largely Irish crew, like Bloodfist VIII!

Sometimes you get a special opportunity that lets you in the door to watch folk who were the music pathfinders of their day, recreate that day. This feature documentary follows surviving Bothy Band members Matt Molloy, Dónal Lunny, Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, Kevin Burke, Paddy Glackin and Paddy Keenan in their coming together for the first time since 1978 to rehearse and reflect on the music they made together and the impact it had on each of their lives and those of former members.

The Bothy Band is also the story of rock and roll, Irish style! Rebellious young things making their own music - they were the sound of the 70’s, who wear themselves out and are looking back on the most creative days of their lives, it’s about friendship, youth, loss of age, vigor, loss of friends, legacy, these are universal themes… and how vulnerable the band make themselves in the run up to the concert, can they bring it all back?

As audiences we find ourselves willing them on, rooting for them and seeing them play and rekindle their former spark - it’s such a compelling watch, a universal story that gives hope to all about second chances at friendship, creativity, performance!

Also a major part of the film is about Triona - a woman in a man’s world then in the 70’s and now - we give her her rightful place as part of a revolutionary rhythm section, holding the rest of the band together.

The Bothy Band is a powerful and moving film with honesty running right through it. Lunny's steering is really revealing. And as for their soulful skill...well what a special group.

Chronicling the love of Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke), from their first meeting as idealistic twenty-somethings to the disillusionment they face together in middle age, The Before Trilogy also serves as a document of a boundary-pushing and extraordinarily intimate collaboration between director and actors, as Delpy and Hawke imbue their characters with a sense of lived-in experience, and age on-screen along with them. Join us at Light House and Pálás on June 16th, the fateful day that Jesse and Celine met & spent an evening together in Vienna, for the BEFORE TRILOGY MARATHON.

The project also aims to connect European youth from seven countries, understanding the problems that affect other young people, in order to promote empathy and solidarity. National Youth-REC Festivals are being held in all partner countries across Europe in advance of the International Festival.

10 Irish films have been submitted especially for the National Irish Festival, organised by Instruction and Formation. These films cover topics such as mental health, discrimination and the impacts of technology. Two filmmakers and their films will be chosen from each country to travel to Greece for the International Youth-REC Festival in September.

Judges for the National Irish Festival are the esteemed: Aisling O’Brien (Head of Marketing at the Light House Cinema), Nell Hensey (Filmmaker and Co-Founder of Pure Divilment Pictures) and Eleanor Melinn (IFI International Programme Manager at the Irish Film Institute).
